hello hoylake

The season’s final men’s major is finally here and Team Troon will be well represented. Royal Liverpool, also known as Hoylake for the northwest English town where it’s located, hosts The Open Championship for the 13th time. Troon investor Rory McIlroy, who won The Open when it was last played there in 2014, comes in red hot after winning the Scottish Open with a birdie on the final hole last weekend at The Renaissance Club in Scotland.

Gary Woodland looked sharp at the Scottish Open too, ending up in a tie for 25th. He’s made seven cuts in 10 Opens. Matt Fitzpatrick returns to his native England (he’s from Sheffield) with added inspiration this week: his brother Alex qualified for the championship and the two have adjoining lockers. Matt, who was low amateur in his first Open back in 2013, comes home with three Top-20s in his last five starts. “I’ve got to be realistic about where I am, where my game is,” he said on Monday. “No, it’s not obviously where I would like it to be. I think everyone would be like to be playing golf like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler right now, but that’s pretty rare for the rest of us. I think for me, a good finish, all jokes aside, would be kind of top 30 this week. I really do.”

Justin Thomas (T60 in Scottish Open) is hoping to find a spark in his game this week, as is Alex Noren, who has five Top 20s in nine Open appearances. Matt Kuchar, whose best finish in 15 Opens has been a second in 2017, is currently the third alternate for the field, based on his OWGR of 58th.

On PGA CHAMPIONS, Colin Montgomerie came in tied for 27th at the Kaulig Companies Championship in Ohio. Next up is The Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl in Wales July 27-30. Monty finished ninth in the event last year and tied for 11th in 2020.

Yealimi Noh missed the cut at the Dana Open on the LPGA Tour but is counting on some good mojo from the past at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational in Michigan this week. Last year she finished in a tie for 10th and the previous year tied for third in the event.
