TO THE LINKSLAND
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Michael Bamberger’s highly enjoyable book, “To the Linksland,” which chronicles a season he spent caddying on the European Tour but is truly centered around his time spent that year playing the classic (and one mystical) links courses of Scotland.
Reading it might just get Team Troon members in the proper frame of mind as they head this week to the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club in East Lothian, located right next door to Muirfield. The private club, which has hosted the event since 2019, is owned by Americans (the Savardi family) with a course designed by an American (Tom Doak). And another American, Xander Schauffele, is the defending champion. Justin Thomas (looking to rebound from missing the cut in 2022), Matt Fitzpatrick (who tied for sixth last year), Alex Noren (who won this tournament in 2016 when it was played at Castle Stuart Golf links in the Scottish Highlands), Troon investor Rory McIlroy, and Gary Woodland (who tied with Noren in 30th place last year) are in the field.
On PGA CHAMPIONS, Colin Montgomerie heads to Firestone Country Club in Ohio for the Kaulig Companies Championship. Just over halfway through the season, Monty currently ranks 19th in the Schwab Cup standings, with four Top-10s in 13 appearances.
