Welcome to the Family

HELLO HALLŌ!

Troon Makes a Move in Canada WITH A NEW DOUG CARRICK course IN NELSON, British columbia

Tucked away deep in the Kootenay Rockies, sitting high on a beautiful bench above the historic city of Nelson, BC, and the sparkling waters of Kootenay Lake, is the site of Troon’s tantalizing new Canadian course. Say hello to Hallō Nelson.

The centerpiece of this new upscale residential development will be a stunning Doug Carrick-designed mountain course that promises edge-of-your-cart-seat thrills. The course will be a sporty par-70, 6,000-yarder with plenty of drama. Situated on the site of the existing Granite Pointe Golf Club, the new Carrick-designed layout will open in 2027, incorporating many of the existing playing corridors. However, for all intents and purposes, it will be an entirely new golf course. And, unquestionably, it will be the pride of every future resident of the multi-phase Hallō Nelson development.

“It’s a compact site with stunning views of the mountains, the lake, and the town of Nelson,” said Carrick, one of Canada’s most admired and prolific architects. In the past three decades Carrick has created many of the highest-ranked courses in the country, including Greywolf, Muskoka Bay, Bigwin Island, and Humber Valley, all of which sit comfortably in Canada’s Top 100.

Not surprisingly, Carrick’s new design at Hallō Nelson, although shorter than many of his other courses, will incorporate the same architectural style that he’s known for. Golfers can expect large, undulating greens, big-and-bold bunkering, tremendous variety, creative and intriguing holes, and a polished “modern” feel throughout.

Although Carrick, who is based in Toronto, has worked extensively in Eastern Canada, he’s certainly no stranger to the mountain golf genre. His mountain masterpiece, Greywolf, in the alpine resort community of Panorama is also located in the Kootenay Rockies region of eastern British Columbia. It’s a stunning creation that is home to the legendary “Cliffhanger” hole, a one-of-a-kind par-3 with a green clinging to, you guessed it, a cliff.

Another notable Carrick design in the area is The Ridge Course at Predator Ridge, a spectacular mountainside course that’s situated high above Okanagan Lake near Vernon, BC. When the course in Nelson is complete, these three layouts will certainly make for an exceptional road trip where golfers can experience a “trifecta” of Carrick-designed mountain courses.

“With plenty of elevation change and towering trees, the course at Hallō will have a distinct parkland feel,” said the soft-spoken Carrick, who apprenticed under the late C.E. Robinson, a Stanley Thompson protégé. “It’s going to be fun and relatively short by championship standards. Strong players will love the opportunity to post a great score but still be challenged by the shot requirements. And your average recreational player should be able to get around without losing too many golf balls. I want to make it fun and captivating for everyone. And the views from this course are some of the best I’ve ever seen from any golf course.”

While it might be somewhat premature to single-out a signature hole, an early candidate is the par-4 13th. (formerly the 16th on the existing Granite Pointe GC). With a perched tee on the highest point of the property, the hole will plunge down the mountainside to a spectacular green framed by jagged peaks and the shimmering surface of Kootenay Lake. To add to the allure, numerous trees here will also be removed to enhance the breathtaking vista.

In addition, the 12th, an entirely new hole traversing high on the ridge, will be another “wow” moment during the round. “That should be an exciting little stretch,” said Carrick. “Those back-to-back holes will really capture the beauty of the Kootenay Rockies.”

And, speaking of those Kootenay Rockies, the city of Nelson (with a population of just 10,000 it feels more like a town) is, unquestionably, a flagship destination within the region. Known for its wonderful High Victorian architecture (there are more than 350 heritage buildings), historic downtown Nelson exudes a charm that is unlike anything else in British Columbia.

A vibrant arts community, Nelson is the quintessential British Columbia mountain town. It’s brimming with culture, eclectic stores, wonderful restaurants and cafes, and an abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities.

Residents of the new Hallō Nelson development — the first phase of 24 fully-curated, fairway-side townhomes has already been launched — will thoroughly enjoy the Kootenay Rockies setting, the mountain culture that envelops everything, and the many amenities in the upscale development.

Besides a massive network of mountain biking and hiking trails, the modern mountain community will include dining options, boutique retail, thermal spa, heated pools, and a fitness facility. Residents will also wake up every morning to a fantastic Doug Carrick-designed mountain golf course. And, without a doubt, they’ll happily say “hello” to that.
