GRASS CLIPPINGS ROLLING HILLS
With one flick of the switch on November 30, 2023, golf in Arizona was changed forever. Night golf made its debut when Grass Clippings Rolling Hills in Tempe became the first fully lit 18-hole golf course in the Grand Canyon State.
Some 78 LED lights illuminate a renovated executive course originally built in the 1960s, which now plays as a par 54, par-3 golf course at night and as a mix of par 3s and 4s during the day. Holes range from 90 to 200-plus yards, with 360-degree views of downtown Tempe, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, downtown Phoenix, the adjacent Phoenix Zoo, and the nighttime silhouette of Papago Buttes. Grass Clippings, an apparel company founded in 2018, has signed a 30-year lease of the property with the city of Tempe.
The course is open daily, with play available nightly until midnight Friday through Sunday and 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Green fees range from $45 to $87. A driving range, which will soon feature Toptracer technology, is also on the property.
Lights are just the start at Rolling Hills. Next up is a clubhouse renovation, a new Mexican food restaurant and a new patio bar. But that’s not all. The Grass Clippings team is also adding a hilltop bar near the eighth hole, an activity lawn and video display, and an entertainment site for live music, markets, and events. All of those projects are scheduled to be completed by next fall. The Grass Clippings team also has plans to implement junior golf programming that will extend access to the golf course and venue to a diverse community of young golfers.
“It’s really special to be able to add night golf to an already amazing daytime golf experience. The lights are a game changer for golf in the Phoenix area,” said Grass Clippings CEO Jake Hoselton, who, with his brother Jimmy and friends Connor Riley and Pete Wilson, started Grass Clippings. “Now golfers can play 18 holes of golf well into the evening and do so in just over two hours. Our location is conducive to slipping in 18-holes of golf on the way home from work, enjoying a golf date night, or meeting up with friends for golf and a beverage.”
“This is one of the best golf markets in the entire world,” added Hoselton. ‘This is a hub for golf, and now that we have lights, even more so.”
