Allred Capital Debuts the Arizona Hideaway Collection
By Joe Passov
Aura, history, and magnetic allure can’t be manufactured. They only emerge over time. Three Arizona golf properties authentically glow with that special something — Tubac Golf Resort & Spa, Rancho Mañana Golf Club, and Sedona Golf Resort. Each is owned by the Allred Family. And late in 2024, all three came into the ecosystem of Troon courses.
For 2025, there’s more in store for this iconic trio. They will join another historic property owned by the Allred Family, The Hermosa Inn, to form The Arizona Hideaway Collection. Individually, the properties are among the most distinctive, low-key gems in the Southwest. Together, they form an unforgettable quartet.
RANCHO MAÑANA GOLF CLUB
After transforming Telluride, Colorado, into a world-class ski destination in the late 1970s/early 1980s, dentist-turned-developer Ron Allred turned his attention to Arizona. In 1994, with his son Mike, he acquired Rancho Mañana Golf Club in Cave Creek. The property had once been a U.S. Calvary outpost and a dude ranch, but its cramped, hay-colored golf course needed roping and rescuing.
The Allreds engineered the necessary fixes and today, Rancho Mañana wows with dramatic drop-shot par 3s and eye candy views of Elephant Butte, Skull Mesa, and the surrounding foothills of the Tonto National Forest.
Serious foodies will tell you that Rancho Mañana’s main course is its restaurant, the Tonto Bar & Grill. With its innovative Southwestern cuisine and stunning outdoor patio, it’s a favorite spot to entertain out-of-towners or celebrate special occasions.
TUBAC GOLF RESORT & SPA
In 2002, the Allreds snagged another venerable outpost, Tubac Golf Resort & Spa. Situated just minutes from the world-renowned Tubac art colony, some 45 miles south of Tucson, the property began life as the 18th century Spanish colonial Otero Ranch. It wasn’t until 1996, however, that Tubac Golf Resort popped into the national golf conversation, when the hit movie “Tin Cup” premiered, portions of which were filmed at Tubac.
Architect Ken Kavanaugh added another nine holes in 2006, dividing the 27-hole course into the Otero, Anza, and Rancho nines. Many holes are framed by mature Cottonwood trees and mountain backdrops, while others tangle with mesquite trees and the Santa Cruz River. This past summer, the resort reinvigorated the Rancho nine, re-shaping and re-grassing the greens with new Dominator Bentgrass, resulting in superior playing conditions.
Not to be missed is a beverage at the resort’s 19th hole — the bar at the Stables Ranch Grille. Once the stables for the historic Otero Ranch, the bar and its adjacent dining room feature flourishes such as rock floors, saddle barstools, hand-hewn beams, and sombreros. The property also features 98-casita style rooms, a 3,000 square-foot spa, 17th-centry style mission chapel, banquet space, and endless area adventures.
THE HERMOSA INN
Next on the shopping list for the Allred’s was another Southwest institution, the Hermosa Inn, which they acquired in 2015. The Hermosa Inn was once the 1930s home of legendary cowboy artist Lon Megargee, whose painting, The Last Drop, adorns the interior of every Stetson hat. Today’s Megargee’s abode anchors a boutique resort of 43 casitas that are draped atop six acres of lush desert landscaping in the tony enclave of Paradise Valley.
Much beloved in Phoenix’s Valley of the Sun is the resort’s restaurant, LON’s at The Hermosa. Ranked among the nation’s 100 Most Romantic Restaurants by OpenTable and a “Top 100 Brunch Restaurant in America,” it’s ideal for any occasion, thanks to a gorgeous indoor space and a can-you-top-this patio experience that takes in views of the Praying Monk rock formation jabbed into Camelback Mountain. For a memorable encore, sip one at LON’s Last Drop Bar.
SEDONA GOLF RESORT
The final jewel in the Allreds’ gem collection is Sedona Golf Resort, acquired in 2021. Western movie buffs may remember the setting for its appearance in the 1965 western comedy “The Rounders,” but today, the smiles stem from the flawlessly green fairways and crimson backdrops. When the Gary Panks design first opened in 1988, PING founder Karsten Solheim proclaimed it “the prettiest golf course in the United States.” The 210-yard, par-3 10th hole likely prompted the comment, where a jaw-dropping panoramic view of Cathedral Rock greets the golfer.
Elsewhere at this 6,646-yard, par-71 layout you’ll encounter sagebrush and gulches, plus wild climbs and dips. The 4,350-foot elevation also means you’ll gain extra distance with woods and irons, something no one complains about.
“The Arizona Hideaway Collection was born from one family’s love of the desert,” concludes Bailey Preusse, Arizona Hideaway Collection VP of Marketing & Business Development. “The collection tells the story of the family’s passion for breathing life into historic places, for innovating to meet the needs of what modern travelers are really seeking: off-the-beaten path experiences, food experiences, and outdoor experiences, in places of great beauty and character.”
Four historic properties with unmistakable modern vibe have been brought together. For quality, character, and visual splendor, this is a Hideaway worth discovering. ▪
