Major Time

Some guys play the week before a major. Others don’t. Troon investor Rory McIlroy did at the RBC Canadian Open in Toronto last weekend, and while he didn’t repeat as champion, he did finish tied for eighth at 12-under. Matt Fitzpatrick and Matt Kuchar also played, ending up tied with each other in 20th place. That trio, plus the other three members of Team Troon, now head to the season’s third major, the 123rd U.S. Open on the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club.

Defending champion Fitzpatrick is looking to become the first player since Brooks Koepka (2017, 2018), and just the seventh overall, to win back-to-back U.S. Opens. He’s got three Top-20 finishes this year, including one win. McIlroy won the title in 2011 and has finished in the Top 10 the past two years. Gary Woodland captured the title in 2019 and finished in a tie for 10th last year. Alex Noren has only made three cuts in nine U.S. Open appearance, topped so far by a tie for 17th in 2020. Since finishing as the low amateur in his first U.S. Open back in 1998, Kuchar has compiled seven Top 20 finishes in 20 appearances. And he’s made the cut in seven of his last eight tournaments this season, a run that includes four Top-20s. This will be the ninth U.S. Open for Justin Thomas, whose best finish thus far is a tie for eighth in 2020.

At the American Family Insurance Championship in Wisconsin, Colin Montgomerie posted his second best finish this season, a tie for fourth, after rounds of 67-69-69. The performance moves him up to 14th in the season-long Schwab Cup Standings on PGA CHAMPIONS. He’s off this week before heading to Endicott, New York, for the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open that begins June 23.

Yealimi Noh heads to Michigan to play in this weekend’s Mejier Classic For Simply Give. It will be the eighth tournament of the 2023 season for Noh, who also currently ranks eighth on the LPGA Tour in Average Driving Distance at 277.8 yards.
